Frequently Asked Questions - Neurodiversity & ADHD

Is therapy helpful for late-diagnosed ADHD?

Absolutely. Late recognition can bring relief, grief, anger, and re-evaluation of past experiences. Therapy provides space to process these emotions, rebuild identity, and develop compassionate strategies for moving forward.

Can ADHD be connected to anxiety or trauma?

Yes. ADHD frequently co-occurs with anxiety, chronic stress, and trauma. A nervous-system-informed approach helps address regulation, safety, and emotional resilience alongside executive functioning support.

What approaches do you use for neurodiverse adults?

My work is neurodiversity-affirming and integrates polyvagal-informed therapy, parts work, ACT, narrative therapy, and trauma-informed care. Sessions are collaborative and adapted to your pace, sensory needs, and goals.

How can therapy help with adult ADHD/neurodiversity?

Therapy can help you better understand attention, motivation, emotional regulation, and executive functioning challenges. It also supports reducing overwhelm, building realistic routines, strengthening self-compassion, and addressing anxiety, burnout, or low mood that often develops from years of trying to “keep up.”

Do I need a formal ADHD diagnosis to start therapy?

No. Many adults come to therapy because they suspect ADHD or recognize themselves in neurodivergent experiences. You do not need a diagnosis or referral to begin therapy. Exploration, support, and practical strategies are available whether you are diagnosed, self-identifying, or simply curious.

Is ADHD therapy only about organization and productivity?

No. While practical strategies can be helpful, therapy also addresses the emotional and nervous-system impact of living in a world that often feels misaligned. We work with stress, shame, identity, masking, and emotional intensity — not just to-do lists.

I function well on the outside, is therapy still helpful?

Yes. Many adults with ADHD or other forms of neurodiversity appear high-functioning while feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or disconnected internally. Therapy can help you move from survival mode into a more sustainable, regulated way of living.

What is neurodiversity-affirming therapy?

Neurodiversity-affirming therapy recognizes that brains work in different ways and that these differences are not flaws to be fixed. Therapy focuses on understanding how your brain functions, reducing shame and self-criticism, and helping you build strategies and systems that support your nervous system, energy, and values.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, burned out, or unsure how to support yourself in a way that truly works, neurodiversity-affirming therapy can help you feel more grounded, capable, and connected. You are welcome to book a consultation to explore next steps.
